Texas Rep. Ted Poe warned gun control activists in Congress if they want to see the results of restrictive gun control laws, just look south of the border.
ìThe only ones who would have guns would be the government and, of course, criminals; who ignore gun laws,î he said in a speech on the House floor on Tuesday.
This scenario he dubbed the ëMexico modelí, where the government has placed extremely restrictive measures on gun ownership. In Mexico, the government has maintained a monopoly on guns, with only one gun store located in its capitol, resulting in an expansive gun trafficking network.
The Republican from Humble compared Chicago and Washington DC ó both with extensive gun-free zones ó to Mexico, saying they all had reputations for being unsafe, violent areas. Poe criticized gun control supporters for working in the gun-free zone of Washington DC, yet going to work each day in a place teeming with armed security cards stationed throughout Capitol Hill.
ìItís hypocritical of the gun control crowd in this chamber to say ëmore guns for me, but not for thee,íî he said, gazing out at fellow members in the House chamber.
Poe also jabbed at the United Stateís ëfast and furiousí scandal ñwhere the government let criminals obtain firearms to track the movement of Mexican drug cartels ñ as adding to the thousands of assault weapons in the hands of Mexican criminals.
ìBut thatís another story,î he said.
