Dear Neighbor,

It’s been a busy few weeks around the Second Congressional District. Here are a few pictures that highlight some recent events around our community:

I was excited to meet with a group of Webelos from the Sam Houston Area Council. This was an impressive group that asked some excellent questions about what it means to be a Member of Congress, the work that I do in Washington, and what life was like as a judge. These young Texans are learning service, community engagement, and leadership development at an early age, and I loved spending some time with them.

I also was honored to receive the “Hero of Main Street” award from the National Retail Federation. The award recognizes Members of Congress for outstanding support of small businesses within the retail industry.

I joined with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Children’s Assessment Center to host a forum that highlighted federal and local initiatives to put an end to modern day slavery, human trafficking. We had over 200 individuals attend this briefing. It highlighted DHS's "Blue Campaign," the agency’s effort to bring this heinous crime out of the shadows. We also heard remarks from Elaine Stolte, Director of the Children’s Assessment Center, Houston Police Department Chief Martha Montalvo, Minal Davis with Mayor Turner’s Office and trafficking survivor Kathy McGibbon. Human trafficking occurs all around us. We must stop traffickers in their tracks. Our children are not for sale, in our town, in our state or in our country.

I also hosted the fourth annual “Honor Houston Heroes” in Spring Branch where the community honors past, present, and future servicemen and women. These men and women represent the best of our community, state, and nation. We call ourselves patriots, but few of us have the scars to prove it. Few have the courage to face and embrace the darkest unknown, the possibility of not going home. The men and women in attendance have known that fear. As we fly the stars and stripes, may we always honor their service, remember their sacrifice, and be grateful that they stepped forward to defend liberty and all that we cherish as a nation.

GOD and TEXAS,

TED POE
