POE STATEMENT ON HOSTAGE SITUATION IN ALGERIA

Early reports to the State Department indicate that Al Qaeda operatives have taken hostages (including several Americans) at the British Petroleum facility in Algeria.  I have been in direct contact with senior Administration officials handling the matter. I urge them to take swift action and do whatever is necessary to ensure the safe and prompt rescue of the hostages.
